“Early Learning Matters: A Welcome from Sugartree Lane Preschool”
Kia ora and welcome to our very first blog post! Whether you’re a curious parent looking into early learning options in central Auckland, or one of the lovely families already walking through our doors each day, we’re so glad you’re here.
Why the Early Years Matter So Much
Ask any expert (or parent!) and they’ll tell you: those first five years are golden. Brains are wiring, personalities are blooming, and every positive interaction helps shape the kind of adult a child will one day become. That’s the power of early childhood education — and the responsibility we hold close.
At Sugartree, we believe quality early education is a beautiful mix of curiosity, care, and connection. Our kaiako (teachers) bring diverse experiences, passion, and warmth to their work. They’re here to guide, not direct. To nurture, not rush. To notice the little things and celebrate the big ones.
A Little Bit About Me
I’m Malcolm, the new owner of Sugartree Lane. My background is in storytelling, education, and creative media, and while I’m not a parent myself, I’ve spent enough time working with young people (and wrangling nieces, nephews and god children) to know just how powerful those early experiences are.
When this centre became available, I saw a rare opportunity, not just to run a business, but to help shape a space that genuinely makes a difference. One that values the arts, diversity, and imagination as much as structure and care. I’ll be around the centre regularly (especially on Mondays), so please don’t be shy about saying hi or sharing your thoughts.
We’ve already kicked off music sessions special guest Jonathan, who plays with the Auckland Philharmonia, and we’re dreaming up other creative offerings to bring in throughout the year.

What Makes Sugartree Lane Special?
We’re proudly located in the heart of Auckland’s CBD, a peaceful pocket of play surrounded by city life. Our centre is small enough to feel personal, but big enough to offer a rich and varied programme.
We value:
Creativity and expression, through music, art, and open-ended play
Cultural diversity, with whānau stories woven into our curriculum
Community, built through strong relationships and shared moments
Respect, for tamariki, whānau, and the world around us
We also believe in clear communication, warm welcomes, and the kind of care that leaves both children and parents feeling safe and supported.
Thanks for Being Part of Our Story
This blog will be a space to share tips, ideas, centre updates, and interviews, all from a place of honesty and heart. If you’ve got questions you’d love answered, parenting topics you’d like explored, or just something cute your child said that deserves a shout-out, we’re all ears.
And if you’ve enjoyed being part of Sugartree so far, we’d love if you could leave us a review on Google. It really helps new families find us and builds our presence in the local community.
Here’s to new beginnings and to raising kind, curious, resilient humans, together.
Ngā mihi nui,
Malcolm
