There are colorful baskets on the desk, one red and one green, containing various items, including a plush toy dressed in a gray outfit with a hood and a face mask.

Transition to School Programme

At Sugartree Lane Preschool, school readiness is woven into everyday learning. Through play, exploration, relationships, and meaningful experiences, our tamariki develop the confidence and skills they need for a successful transition to school.

Alongside this daily learning, we offer a dedicated weekly Transition to School programme for children approaching school age. Led by our experienced kaiako, these focused sessions provide opportunities for tamariki to strengthen key skills, build independence, and become familiar with the expectations of life at kura.

Our Transition to School programme focuses on:

  • Building independence, self-help skills, and confidence.

  • Strengthening early literacy and numeracy through play-based learning.

  • Developing communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

  • Encouraging resilience, self-regulation, and social confidence.

  • Supporting children to participate in group learning experiences.

  • Helping tamariki develop the dispositions that support lifelong learning.

We also work closely with nearby schools to support a smooth and positive transition. By building relationships and maintaining open communication with whānau and local kura, we help children feel confident about taking their next step.

Grounded in the principles of Te Whāriki, our approach recognises that school readiness is about much more than academic knowledge. It includes a sense of belonging, emotional wellbeing, curiosity, independence, and the confidence to engage with new experiences.

Our goal is simple: to help every child leave Sugartree Lane feeling capable, connected, and excited about starting school.
