Giving Back at Sugartree Lane

Celebrating kindness in action

At Sugartree Lane, kindness isn’t just something we talk about with our tamariki… it’s something we try to live by as a team. Part of that is looking for ways to give back beyond our preschool walls.

We’re proud to share that we now support Starship Children’s Hospital with a regular monthly donation. Starship has been there for so many New Zealand families, providing world-class care for our children when they need it most. Contributing each month feels like a small but meaningful way to stand alongside their incredible work.

When my godson was in hospital as an infant, we experienced first-hand how incredible the staff at Starship were. Their care and compassion left a lasting impact. Later, as an author, I had the privilege of doing readings at Starship for the tamariki, and those moments showed me just how much joy and strength a small act of kindness can bring to children and their whānau.

We also joined in Daffodil Day this year, supporting the Cancer Society’s mission to improve cancer care, fund research, and provide much-needed support services across Aotearoa. For many of us, this cause is close to home, and it felt right to contribute to a day that symbolises hope. Find out how to support the cancer society here.

Kindness at the heart of what we do

Kindness is a shared value at our centre. It shapes how we treat each other, how we work with whānau, and how we support our tamariki every day. By modelling acts of generosity and compassion, we hope to help children grow up seeing kindness as a natural and powerful part of life.

Why it matters

Giving back doesn’t just help the organisations we support… it also reminds us, and hopefully teaches our tamariki, that we’re part of something bigger. Acts of generosity, big or small, create ripples that strengthen our communities. Supporting these causes is one way we can model values of care and compassion for the next generation.

Looking ahead

We’ll continue to look for ways to support organisations doing good mahi, and we hope our commitment encourages others in our community to do the same, in whatever way feels right for them.

Ngā mihi for being part of our journey. Together, we can keep kindness at the heart of what we do.
